President Joe Biden is taking steps to prohibit new offshore oil and gas drilling in most U.S. coastal waters, a late-term move aimed at preempting potential efforts by the incoming Trump administration to broaden offshore drilling activities.

Biden said the move was aligned with both his climate change agenda and his goal to conserve 30% of US lands and waters by 2030

The ban affects the entire Eastern Seaboard, the Pacific Coast along California, Oregon and Washington, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Northern Bering Sea.
