How to raise salinity. | Reef2Reef
Jun 21, 2020 · I just bought a Hanna salinity checker and checked both the water I was mixing and the tank water. For a while I’ve been using a secondhand refractometer, which I’ve never calibrated myself (rookie mistake, I know). I’ve always tested it to ppm, and it’s come up as 1.024 specific gravity.
Salinity - PSU vs PPT | Reef2Reef
Jan 29, 2024 · An older salinity scale is ppt (10-3), where salinity is defined by “the salt content is the weight of the inorganic salts contained in 1 kg of seawater if all bromide and iodide are replaced by an equivalent amount of oxides” (Knudsen, 1901). In summary, I should aim for a PSU of 35 (vs 35 PPT).
Ideal Salinity | Reef2Reef
Jun 12, 2018 · If the organisms in the aquarium are from brackish environments with lower salinity, or from the Red Sea with higher salinity, selecting something other than 35 ppt may make good sense. Otherwise, I suggest targeting a target salinity of 35 ppt (specific gravity = 1.0264; conductivity = 53 mS/cm).
Raising Salinity from 33 to 35 PPT | Reef2Reef
Jan 4, 2025 · Hello fellow hobbyists, I recently acquired a Red Sea XL200 and have a quick question on Salinity. I've tried some calculators and searching threads, but I can't seem to form a conclusive decision on how to proceed. My current tank is at 1.025 / 33 PPT. I want to get it to 1.025 / 35 PPT...
Tropic Marin Hydrometer vs. Hanna Salinity Checker
Jan 20, 2025 · New reefer, just doing my first salinity measurements for a CUC QT tank. Started with a Hanna Salinity checker (TM hadn't arrived) and mixed water to what is showing as 34.5 ppt on a freshly calibrated unit. Tropic Marin Hydrometer (spun to remove bubbles) is showing 1.02425 at 25.6C which equates to 32.2 PPT.
Refractometers And Salinity Measurement | Reef2Reef
Dec 10, 2015 · Refractive Index and Salinity Aquarists can use the effects that added salts have on the refractive index of a water solution to determine the salinity of reef aquarium water. As the salinity of seawater rises, the amount of salt added rises, so the refractive index rises. Figure 1 plots seawater’s refractive index vs. its salinity.
Reading Salinity | Reef2Reef
Nov 26, 2024 · I seem to be spending a ton of my time lately trying to get salinity right, and can't seem to align between all my testers. I have the following to check with: 1. Vertex Refractometer 2. eBay Refractometer 3. Milwaukee MA887 4. Instant Ocean Hydrometer and I am using AccuraSea salinity reference solution on 1 - 3. 1.
Why is my salinity dropping | Reef2Reef
Jan 23, 2019 · I have my apex salinity probe calibrated at 35 ppt and its accurate at that point. But if there is a slight decrease or increase in salinity it overstates the change if that makes sense. I have over 200 gallons and 1-2 gallons of extra fresh water has my probe saying I’m at less than 32ppt which shouldn’t be the case and I check it against ...
Salinity Probes that work with the Apex | Reef2Reef
Oct 7, 2019 · I could Iinvest in a $2000 lab grade salinity tester but that would chase me out of the hobby. The hundreds if not thousands of people reporting problems with thus probe does say something about the build quality. There are hundreds of expertise reefers with way more experience than I have also acknowledged issues with the Neptune salinity probe.
Real-time Salinity Monitor? | Reef2Reef
May 14, 2022 · Real time salinity monitors are conductivity meters. Same thing as a TDS meter, but designed for the right range for full strength seawater. Whether any particular hobby brand implements it optimally or not, conductivity meters are the go to way for chemical oceanographers to measure salinity. It can be fast, highly accurate and highly precise.
