The former Fairchild Flour elevator tower has been a landmark structure on the Cuyahoga River since the 1870s. Located on the east bank, just south of the Detroit-Superior Bridge, it is one of the oldest surviving structures from that era.

The Columbus Street Bridge of 1835 marked the beginning of the first period of bridge building over the Cuyahoga River — bridges of wood with masonry piers, designed for wagon traffic. As late as 1835 there were still three of these: the Columbus Street Bridge, one at Seneca (West Third) Street, and one at Division Street (Center Street).

Historic district of 43 buildings constructed between 1888 and 1930. The district runs on Broadway between Cable and Barkwill Avenues, and on E. 55th Street between Lufkin and Broadway Avenues, with a few buildings to either side.

By 1993, 4 great vehicular bridges provided high-level spans over the Cuyahoga Valley. They were the Veterans Memorial Bridge (opened in 1918), the Hope Memorial Bridge (1932), the Main Ave. Bridge (1939), and the Innerbelt Bridge (1959).

On the foggy evening of November 16, 1895, Railcar 642 of the Cleveland Electric Railway Company, heading west from downtown, crashed through a gate and plummeted 100 feet off the Viaduct into the Cuyahoga River.

In the same park system is the Brookpark Bridge, built in 1933 by W.H. Rabe, and D.H. Overman. It carries State Route 17 over the Rocky River Valley, near the Cleveland airport. It is a reinforced concrete multiple-arch structure, of the type often found in bridges of the “twenties and thirties.
