Its main use these days for long-distance traffic from South Ayrshire to England: the route from Ayr to Gretna via A70- M74 / A74 (M) is easier than A70/ A76 / A75. The A70 first appears on the capital's streets at the Haymarket, not quite a mile west of the Castle.

Traffic from Ayr will follow Holmston Road, Hillfoot Road and Dalmellington Road to join the A77 at Bankfield Roundabout. There will then be one overnight closure of the A77 between Whitletts Roundabout and Bankfield Roundabout with the A70 remaining open, between 8pm on Monday 13th January and 6am on Tuesday 14th January.

Jan 29, 2018 · You can avoid Lanark by turning right to stay on the A70 about half a mile after crossing Hyndford Bridge, and the A70 heads northeast towards Ravenstruther where it meets the A743 from Lanark. The A7 is an excellent road, particularly now that the twisty section at Auchenrivock has been bypassed.
