After being wiped out statewide by 1830 due to the demand for their pelts and the clearing of forests, beavers are now thriving throughout Ohio.

The massive Sandusky Bay is the most conspicuous bay on Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline. State Route 2 passes over the bay via a bridge that is over 2.5 miles in length, and is crossed by many of the nearly 7 million visitors that come to the Sandusky Bay region each year.

Sandusky Bay is one of the principal bodies of water in northern Ohio. It is situated in Erie, Ottawa, and Sandusky counties and is part of Lake Erie. It was identified as Lac (Lake) Sandouské on a 1718 map by Guillaume Delisle.

This IBA extends along the Sandusky River riparian corridor from Upper Sandusky north to Fremont, the entire river flowing 130 miles from its source in Crawford County to the Muddy Creek and Sandusky Bay.
