Jul 25, 2022 · In 1992, Orbis converted a DC-10 wide-body aircraft into a full teaching and surgical hospital. Donated by United Airlines, it was the first non-land-based hospital to gain U.S. accreditation. Orbis flew its first mission in 1994 to Beijing, China.

Introducing... the second-generation Flying Eye Hospital! This replacement DC-10 aircraft was twice the size of the original DC-8. The extra space in the DC-10 was needed to accommodate the expanding scope of the Flying Eye Hospitals operations.
