The M635CSi model, introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983, is the first in the line of M6 models. In 1987, the equivalent model for the North American (U.S. and Canada) market was introduced and badged simply 'M6'. With sharp styling, room for four, and a motorsport-derived inline-six engine, the E24 M6 and M635CSi offer a unique combination of grand touring and performance. The Euro-market M635CSi is powered by the M1-derived M88/3, while the North American- and Japanese-market M6 is equipped with the S38.

The top of the line variant for the E24 BMW 6 Series was the M635CSi. The first generation of a BMW Motorsport tuned 6 Series, this new model was known as the M635CSi in most parts of the world, yet in Japan and North America, the model was dubbed the M6, which featured a less powerful engine.
