May 18, 2018 · YOUTH ADMINISTRATION, NATIONAL (NYA) was established by executive order on 26 June 1935 as a division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It remained under WPA jurisdiction until 1939, then the Federal Security Agency became its home until September 1943, when it dissolved.

The National Youth Administration (NYA) was the New Deal's attempt to combat the problem of youth unemployment on a more long-term basis. Created by executive order on June 26, 1935, as part of the new Works Progress Administration (WPA), the NYA had twin functions from the start.

History: In the summer of 1934, the Workers Education Section of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration established educational camps for unemployed young women. The National Advisory Committee, chaired by Hilda W. Smith, acted in an advisory capacity in this field.

During its eight-year existence, from 1935 to 1943, the NYA provided practical work experience and training to several million American young people who were underserved by other New Deal programs.
