Gandalf, known largely as the Grey and later, briefly, the White, and originally named Olórin (Quenya), was an Istar (Wizard), dispatched to Middle-earth in the Third Age to combat the threat of Sauron.

Dec 29, 2024 · Gandalf was one of the five Istari sent to Middle-earth by the Valar in the Third Age. In Valinor he was known as Olórin. Gandalf was instrumental in bringing about the demise of Sauron in T.A. 3019, chiefly by encouraging others and dispensing his wisdom at pivotal times.

Gandalf was an Istar wizard. In the Undying Lands, Gandalf was a Maia spirit called Olórin. He lived in the Gardens of Lorien and would often visit Nienna the Compassionate. In circa TA 1000 (Third Age), he was chosen as one of the Istari wizards who were sent to Middle-earth.

Tolkien introduces him in The Silmarillion as the Maia Olórin. "Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin. He too dwelt in Lórien, but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned pity and patience."

I think Gandalf (pre-balrog fight) forgot much of his Olorin personality and memories because he lived in middle earth for a couple thousand years. When Gandalf reveals himself to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, it seems like his Olorin personality is more front and center.

Born under the name of Olórin, Gandalf is a Maiar Istari born in the ancient land of Valinor during the year 5092 BFA (Before First Age). He spent his early days training under the Valar Nienna, who taught him to become quite nice and wise.
