This document discusses the print quality of 2D or matrix symbols based on the ISO 15415 specification. Because of their popularity, we will focus only on QR Code and Data Matrix Code. There are other 2D symbols in current use, including Aztec, MaxiCode (UPS Code) and Postnet/IMB. Let’s be clear about nomenclature.

Large amounts of text and data can be stored securely and inexpensively when using the PDF417 barcode symbology. The printed symbol consists of several linear rows of stacked codewords. Each codeword represents 1 of 929 possible values from one of three different clusters.

In PDF417 font, PDF stands for Portable Data File and 417 signifies that every symbol character uses 4 bars and 4 spaces in a 17 module length. This high-density 2D barcode symbology can encode text, digits, files, and real data bytes.

GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 QR Code and GS1 DotCode are"two-dimensional (2D) matrix symbology" symbols that can carry all GS1 keys and attributes. It can be applied to hold trade item information such as the item expiry date, serial number or batch/lot number.
