Peripatidae is a family of velvet worms. [1] This family includes more than 90 described species distributed among 13 genera, [2] but some authorities deem only 80 of these species to be valid. [3]

Only two fossil species are confidently assigned as onychophorans: Antennipatus from the Late Carboniferous, and Cretoperipatus from the Late Cretaceous, the latter belonging to Peripatidae. [ 5 ] [ 7 ] In modern zoology , they are known for their mating behaviours and the bearing of live young in some species.

The Peripatopsidae exhibit relatively many characteristics that are perceived as original or "primitive" with respect to the Peripatidae. The species in this family have relatively few legs, ranging from 13 pairs (in Ooperipatellus nanus [ 6 ] ) to a maximum of 29 pairs (in Paraperipatus papuensis [ 7 ] [ 8 ] ).
