Feb 17, 2021 · A=Current Tank Salinity C=New Water Salinity t=Total aquarium volume r=Removed volume of water R=Remaining volume of water D-Desired Salinity (edited) Here's are some examples of it working. Say you have a 80 gallon tank, the salinity is sky high at 1.030, and you're wanting to do a water change to correct it.
Raising Salinity from 33 to 35 PPT | Reef2Reef
Jan 7, 2025 · Hello fellow hobbyists, I recently acquired a Red Sea XL200 and have a quick question on Salinity. I've tried some calculators and searching threads, but I can't seem to form a conclusive decision on how to proceed. My current tank is at 1.025 / 33 PPT. I want to get it to 1.025 / 35 PPT...
Salinity - PSU vs PPT | Reef2Reef
Oct 10, 2022 · An older salinity scale is ppt (10-3), where salinity is defined by “the salt content is the weight of the inorganic salts contained in 1 kg of seawater if all bromide and iodide are replaced by an equivalent amount of oxides” (Knudsen, 1901). In summary, I should aim for a PSU of 35 (vs 35 PPT).
How to raise salinity. | Reef2Reef
Apr 14, 2020 · I just bought a Hanna salinity checker and checked both the water I was mixing and the tank water. For a while I’ve been using a secondhand refractometer, which I’ve never calibrated myself (rookie mistake, I know). I’ve always tested it to ppm, and it’s come up as 1.024 specific gravity.

Oct 7, 2024 · However you measure your salinity, measure it the same every time. I use a refractometer with a calibration solution. I went so far to mix up Randy's calibration solution & it simply matched the one I bought off Amazon Typically, I measure my salinity twice with a refractometer. I apply two drops, let it sit in the window for 20-30 seconds, read.

Dec 23, 2021 · Raising the salinity can be pretty wasteful if you drain water out of the tank and replace it with slightly more saline water. Many people end up making strong brine solutions and mix that in slowly. Beware though; if you dissolve sea salt at a salinity higher than about 50 ppt, subtle changes can occur, including precipitation of carbonates.
Low salinity | Reef2Reef
Aug 1, 2019 · your salinity does not have to change when doing water changes. The scale of the water change does not matter for salinity, it is your testing method. When doing water changes it is important to insure that the salt is fully dissolved in the water( no residue on the bottom of the mixing bucket) and that you check the tank salinity and match the ...
1.025 vs 35 ppt - often used interchangeably? | Reef2Reef
Feb 2, 2018 · I rejoined the hobby back ~2016, and everyone seemed to agree that 1.025 was the perfect salinity. Lately though, more and more I've been hearing that 35 ppt is what you should target for mixed reef or SPS dom. It's strange to me that these are often used interchangeably, since 1.025 is really...
Reef Aquarium Salinity: DIY Calibration Standards
Mar 21, 2024 · Otherwise, I suggest targeting a salinity of S=35 (specific gravity = 1.0264; conductivity = 53 mS/cm). Table one is shaded with a rough guide as to where I think salinity is best maintained, but the exact salinity in the range of 32 to 36 ppt likely makes little difference except to values for important parameters such as calcium or magnesium.
