St Machar’s is a welcoming church that aims to gather new disciples. The congregation is diverse, coming from all over the world and from many different denominations. The church is witness to 1400 years of faith, with a history dating back to around 600.

St Machar’s lost its status as a cathedral and became a parish church within the Church of Scotland. (The name ‘cathedral’ is only a courtesy title.) The revolution also created a means of financing the church, and this stopped the physical decline of the building.

With a beautiful and impressive service the War memorial of St Machar’s Cathedral, Old Aberdeen was unveiled and dedicated yesterday afternoon.

The Cathedral is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day from 1 April to 31 October and 10am to 4pm from 1 November to 31 March. In this Cathedral, the building speaks to us of our Celtic origins, the Roman Church, the years of the Reformation and the period of Episcopacy in the 17th century. The congregation of St. Machar’s feels itself to be part of the church catholic and understands Presbyterianism as simply a form of government.

Like all churches, St Machar’s relies on the generosity of its members and of visitors. We give our money, our times, and our talents in the service of God, and to foster a Christian community. If you don’t liv nearby ‘getting involved’ may seem difficult but you can show your interest by membership of the Friends of the Cathedral.
