The dam is in Barkhamsted, the resulting reservoir reaches north through Hartland almost to Massachusetts, with the compensating reservoir (Lake McDonough) reaching south into New Hartford. The dam is 135 feet tall and 1,950 feet long.

Saville Dam is a concrete earth dam located in New Hartford, Litchfield, Connecticut. The dam, which is on the East Branch Farmington R River, was primarily built for Water Supply purposes, but also serves for benefits.

Barkhamsted is the home of the historical Saville Dam, Barkhamsted Reservoir, and People's and American Legion State Forests. Within the Barkhamsted Reservoir lies the foundations of Barkhamsted Hollow, an original portion of town that was purchased by The Metropolitan District Commission during The Great Depression.

The Saville Dam is one of the most photographed destinations in the Litchfield Hills, with gorgeous stone turrets rising from the Barkhamsted Reservoir. The dam sits near the intersection of Routes 219 and 318 just north of New Hartford.

Although the Barkhamsted Reservoir was named after the town of Barkhamsted and the Saville Dam is in Barkhamstead, only a small fraction of the large reservoir is in Barkhamsted. The reservoir stretches out north towards Hartland, into the Tunxis State Forest, and almost reaches the Massachusetts border.
