Oct 27, 2010 · As a rule of thumb, the incoming part of the tide is going to be the best time to drop your crab gear to the sandy bottom. Due to the vast volume of water exiting the mouth of the Columbia River on an outgoing or ebb tide, the crab tend to hunker down into the sand.

Shad is my preferred crab bait, especially since it means I get to have fun catching more shad in May and June each year. We motored out near one of the islands close to the mouth of the Columbia River and dropped the pots in about 18-20 feet of water.

Feb 16, 2019 · I am going crabbing this next week and have questions and would like some direction towards good areas around Astoria or the western part of the river. I am looking at baker bay and jetty lagoon on google earth and they look good to me.
